Are You an Effective Leader of Generation Next?

As many of you know, for the past few years I have been an avid researcher on issues and topics related to Generation Y (those born between 1977-1994), and I have listened to many different perspectives from men and women who serve as experts on generational issues within the workplace. Although I believe this generational workplace discussion is vitally important, one of the key solutions to many of these generational problems within the workplace is effective leadership. In essence, I believe that seasoned leaders who understand how to effectively influence, lead, and develop leaders of this younger generation will not only solve many workplace issues among different generations, but they will create more effective and powerful companies and organizations as well.

Ironically, after researching, reading, and listening to numerous generational experts, I realized that very few of these experts seem to be aware of the importance of seasoned leaders being able to effectively influence, lead, and develop leaders of Generation Y. As I discuss in my latest leadership book on this subject, A Call to Action, 14 Highly Effective Principles for Leaders of Millennials,I believe that there are four key leadership concepts that all leaders of this younger generation must possess in order to become highly effective at influencing, leading, and developing leaders of this younger generation in America. Here is a brief glimpse into these four leadership concepts that I strongly believe all leaders must possess in order to be successful with this emerging generation in America.

How Political Leaders Can Reach Young Voters during the Mid-Term Elections

In the next few months, congressional and senate leaders throughout the entire country are going to be in the beginning stages of key political races in cities and states all across the nation for the Mid-Term Elections in November of 2010. Although many senators and congressional leaders will probably succeed at holding their seats, there will be several battles in key areas throughout the country between Democrats and Republicans.

Due to President Obama’s huge success with young voters in the Presidential Election back in November of 2008, there is a great chance that many congressional and senate leaders will be looking for this same type of impact from young voters in the upcoming 2010 Mid-Term Elections. Based on my observations of the younger demographic over the past few years, in order to duplicate success with young voters, there are seven key things that these congressional and senate leaders must do in order to win over and inspire this younger demographic in the 2010 Mid-Term Elections like President Obama did in the 2008 Presidential Election.

Are You Effectively Developing Future Leaders of Generation Y?

Over the last two weeks, I had a wonderful opportunity to serve as a guest speaker for a two day leadership retreat in Indiana and one day leadership training in Boston, Massachusetts. Unlike my usual keynote presentations on leadership, these two specific speaking engagements were a little different because they consisted of longer presentations, more leadership content, activities, and interaction with the student leaders of several different organizations on each campus. As you might imagine, the leadership experience was amazing and I truly believe that the students who participated in these leadership programs will see great results as leaders in college and after graduation.

Although the leadership training in Boston was awesome, the most memorable moment had to be the two day leadership retreat at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. The reason this leadership retreat was so unforgettable to me is because not only did I get interrupted in the middle of my speaking presentation with a tornado warning, but I had the opportunity to talk with students for three to four hours following my speaking presentation on the first day. During this amazing conversation with the students, not only did I have the opportunity to hear their concerns and opinions, but I had a chance to offer more leadership wisdom and insight as well.

Following this long conversation with the students and two additional days of leadership trainings in Indiana and Boston, I was able to develop a sense of what I strongly believe are some key leadership concepts we must develop in these aspiring young leaders of the future. Now, these are not the only key leadership concepts that I believe are important for these emerging leaders to understand, but they are key leadership concepts that I believe will enhance these future leaders' lives immensely in the college and working world!

The Future of the Church In America

“How Seasoned Christian Leaders Can Effectively Reach the Younger Generation for Christ”.

A couple of months ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to bring together twenty emerging religious leaders under 40 years of age to talk about the future of the Christian church and how the church can be more effective at reaching this younger generation over the next 10-15 years. Although you do not hear many religious leaders talking about the generational divide within the church, the reality is that studies and research on this very topic continuously point to the fact that the generational divide in the church is not only an issue, but it’s affecting the amount of young men and women who attend church after high school. For instance, in one article written by a Pastor’s wife entitled, “Losing the Millennials,” the pastor’s wife revealed that not only do 69-94% of youth forsake their faith after leaving high school, but within the Assemblies of God churches, 75% of students drop out of the religion after high school and within the Southern Baptist Convention, 88% of students drop out after high school.

After a night of tremendous insight, revelation, and enlightenment on this issue among twenty young and powerful leaders within the Christian community, I now firmly believe that changes must be made amongst seasoned leaders within the church over the next 10-15 years in order to be effective at reaching this younger generation. Although many key issues were discussed in our panel, there were really six key things that I discovered in our conversation on this topic that I believe Christian leaders can do in order to become more effective at reaching young men and women who seem to be dropping out of the church!
